The second video I watched on Ted was a video called "I got 99 problems... palsy is just one". Maysoon is an Arab stand up comedian who's just like everyone else... except she has Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral Palsy is a congenital disorder of movement, muscle tone, or posture. Maysoon speaks about her struggles of dealing with her condition and how she is not pessimistic about it. She is grateful for her condition and doesn't let it get in the way of her being able to do things. She mentions how her father had a very great impact on her life, as well as her mother. Her father used to tell her that she can do whatever she set her mind to and that nothing can stop her.
Maysoons family was very supportive of her dreams. One of which happened to be to become an actress. Of course everyone doubted her ability to put on a show because of her condition and people were constantly doubting her but she managed to be one of the best. Her dreams of pursuing an acting career slowly came to an end when she realized something. Maysoon realized the only thing the Hollywood producers were looking for were perfect people. People with perfect physical attributes, perfect voices, perfect posture and even perfect eye colors. The producers were looking for people with no flaw. Maysoon was put down by this but never gave up.
She began to think about what she could do about this. In which career could she be an entertainer but yet not have to be perfect or flawless? Well once she put her mind to it she realized the comedy industry was definitely the business for her. Maysoon became a very successful stand-up comedian. She even used the Palsy as one of her jokes and things to ease the tension for the audience. She doesn't want people to feel awkward around her because she may be disabled but she's just like all of us. Having Cerebral Palsy was a small challenge in her life that she learned how to overcome. Although she is still dealing with it to this day, it has made her the amazing successful person she was always bound to be.
